What We Know About Lincoln Chafee

Wondering where Lincoln Chafee stands on the issues that matter to Rhode Island's working families?  So do we sometimes.  Here's what we do know:

ABUSE OF POWER IN GOVERNMENT: Chafee served in local government from 1986 to 1998. As council member, he was known to be uncompromising and hard to work with. As mayor he was often accused of abusing his executive authority. Chafee's actions were once extreme enough that his own City Council sued him to limit his executive power.

FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY: In 2003, he voted against an amendment that would have reduced the national debt, thereby increasing the debt of the federal government. And a few years later voted for $14 billion in tax breaks for oil and gas companies. Additionally, Chafee refuses to disclose his personal tax returns.

SUPPORTS BUSH ECONOMIC POLICIES: As Senator, Chafee was in Washingon voting in lock-step with the conservatives and President Bush as they weakened regulation, increased our national debt, and stripped away consumer and homeowner protections, all of which directly contributed to the financial crisis and the tough times that Rhode Island, and our country, are only now begining to recover from.

SUPPORTS OFF SHORE DRILLING: Senator Chafee voted to allow oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico only after Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL) requested he do so. The same drilling that is causing an environmental emergency today. He aslo voted for the Bush energy bill containing $14 billion in tax breaks to oil and gas companies.

OPPOSES FINANCIAL AID FOR MIDDLE CLASS FAMILIES: Senator Chafee opposed increasing financial aid for middle class families and opposed funding for special education. In addition, Chafee fought against increasing the number of children eligible for after school programs and full funding for the No Child Left Behind Act.

But that's not all.  Now former-Senator Chafee wants Rhode Island taxpayers to fix the state's budget deficit with a wide-ranging tax on previously untaxed items like textbooks, school meals, heating fuel, and, shockingly, the equiment that amuptee veterans need to opperate a car.
